Sebastian Smith is a photographic artist and book designer based in Leeds, UK. Currently studying for a BA in Photography at Leeds Arts University he is set to graduate later this year. Smith’s practice is concerned with sculptural forms within the everyday, along with traces of events and actions. Smith’s work has generally found the form of the book with his imagery merging with the design elements and the physical possibilities provided by the book to creates a performative viewing experience for the reader. Whilst his imagery is sculptural in nature Smith has begun to explore sculptural forms of presentation as well, mimicking forms with the imagery itself. This provides contextual resolutions to Smith’s work that are more gallery and exhibition orientated than that of his book forms. Smith has been making photographic works for around 8 years and making books for the last 3, he is currently in the process of launching a small publishing company Whaaat Editions, this will champion young artists through publishing small run, low cost publications.
Smith has participated in a number of group exhibitions, including Myriad (2019) and New Archives (2020) both of which he co-organised, creating their graphics and identities. He has self-published three books and published one book under his Whaaat Editions label.
